GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Use NVL sample bags/ Ziploc bags to properly collect and seal the specimens (contact us to receive one by mail)
2. Use separate bags for each sample
3. Label each bag or container
4. Wear latex or nitrile gloves
5. When finished taking the sample, remove gloves and wash your hands thoroughly
6. If you need any further instruction or have any questions, please contact NVL Laboratories, Inc.

FOR ASBESTOS

  • Wet the area thoroughly before sampling to reduce potential fiber release.

For Popcorn Ceilings

  • Scrape off about a teaspoon of material into the NVL sample bag/ Ziploc baggie.

For Vinyl Flooring/ insulation/ roofing/ siding/ other material

  • Use a sharp tool to cut about 1 sq. inch piece through all layers of the material and seal it into the NVL sample bag / Ziploc baggie.

Note: U.S. postal regulations require that asbestos testing sample containers must be at least 1/4" high. Use a bubble wrap envelope or wrap the specimen in newspaper before mailing.

FOR LEAD (Pb)

1. Choose an area where the paint is peeling and children do not have access.
2. Place a piece of paper underneath the sample area. Use a sharp tool to remove a quantity of about a teaspoon of paint chips/ flakes, making sure to include every layer.
3. Using the paper, place the scrapings into the NVL sample bag/ Ziploc baggie and tightly seal.
4. For Soil: Scoop about a tablespoon of soil off the top 1/2 inch of suspected area.
5. For Household Dust: Take a baby wipe and sweep up the dust in a 1sq. ft. (or known) area. Individually place each wipe into the NVL sample bag/ Ziploc baggie and tightly seal.

MOLD

For Tape Lifts:

1. Fold over the ends of a strip of clear tape to provide a non-sticky surface to hold
2. Apply the adhesive side of the tape to the surface with light to moderate pressure, avoiding any spots with loose debris
3. Remove the tape gently, touching only the ends
4. Avoid folds in the tape while carefully placing it into the sample bag and seal tightly

For Thick Mold Deposits:

1. Scrape off about a teaspoon of material into a Ziploc bag or plastic vial
2. Use a sharp tool to cut about 1 sq. inch piece through all layers of the material (vinyl flooring, any insulation, roofing, siding, or other material) and seal in it NVL sample bag/ Ziploc baggie
3. Take care not to smash the collected mold sample
4. Carefully place into the NVL sample bag/ Ziploc baggie and seal tightly
